Causes and Solutions for Rippling/Bulging in Color-Coated Roofing Sheet During Forming

The bulging issue observed in color-coated steel roofing sheets during the forming process primarily stems from two potential causes:

  1. Excessive Hardness of Substrate Material‌:
If the substrate material of the color-coated sheet is overly hard, stress release during forming may lead to surface bulging. In such cases, insufficient resistance to plastic deformation during shaping can result in rippling, which manifests as bulging.

  2. Impact of Panel Design‌:
Specific panel designs may contribute to bulging. For example, when processing certain profiles (e.g., reduced panel width), lateral contraction of material in wide planar areas combined with longitudinal compression can exceed the material’s critical buckling limit. This instability triggers rippling and subsequent bulging.

Solutions‌:

  • Design Optimization‌:
Incorporate stiffening ribs into planar areas prone to rippling. For instance:

    • The 820-profile panel can include a single central stiffening rib.
    • The 840-profile panel may require multiple stiffening ribs to enhance deformation resistance and minimize bulging.
  • Material Selection‌:
Opt for materials with a lower yield-to-tensile ratio. Such materials exhibit improved resistance to plastic deformation during forming, effectively reducing the likelihood of bulging.

By implementing these measures, bulging issues during the forming of color-coated steel sheets can be significantly mitigated, enhancing both product quality and aesthetic performance.
